Characteristic of Tobey’s later work, this piece reflects his interest in the intersection of form and spirituality. Drawing from his exposure to East Asian aesthetics and his study of Baha’i philosophy, Tobey’s approach is less concerned with representation than with inner vision. The delicate web of brushwork and rubbed pigment suggests both erosion and revelation, mirroring the artist’s fascination with the unseen rhythms of existence.

The work encapsulates Tobey’s mastery of subtle tonal gradation and his meditative approach to image-making, bridging Western abstraction with Eastern calligraphic sensibility.

Mark Tobey "Visage en Negatif", 1943
